HERBIE NAYOKPUK: Iditarod legend leaves legacy that is known around the world. Herbie Nayokpuk never strayed far from his lifelong home on a remote Island at the edge of the Bering Strait north of Nome, but his fame spread around the globe. A dog musher from youth on, he was known to Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race fans all over the world as "The Shishmaref Cannonball,'' a nickname blending his home village of Shishmaref with his straight-ahead style in both dog mushing and life: always smiling, always happy, charging into the new day with the enthusiasm of a puppy. Nayokpuk, 77, died Saturday afternoon at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, surrounded by family members. He suffered a massive stroke at his home in mid-November then lapsed into a coma. Dodo was living on the Isle of Ponza with his girlfriend Maria Rita who owns a store there. He was a part time fisherman and on Friday afternoon he was busy trying to recover a lure made of like a colorful metal fish, used for catching cattle fish. He had lost the lure the evening before while returning to the dock in his boat. He hit his head on a boat propeller which caused massive head injuries. A boat driver got him out of the water almost immediately and administered first aid, but he was too badly injured to survive. Dodo leaves 2 sons Giacomo 22 and Davide 20 and will be buried Wednesday the 19th of July, after cremation in the little town of Courmayeur in Italy in the Alps at the bottom of the Mount Blanc where he operated as Sleddog Sport Instructor and Guide for many years . Pecos was a part of the "up the tracks" Talkeetna dog mushing community in the 70's and 80's when it was dynamic and "original". He ran the Iditarod, the Yukon Quest, and local races. He drove dogs not as much for the competition as for the joy of it. He comes out of the era when we built our own sleds, sewed the harness, and cooked dog food in an iron bucket over a wood fire. My best memories of him are sharing campfires, strong coffee, burnt moosemeat, and quiet humor. Memorial Service for Pecos will be held at 2 PM Saturday, April 29, at the overlook just south of Talkeetna. 4/17/06 Dennis Lee Stordahl passed away April 10, 2006, at his home on Dry Creek. Dennis moved from Fairview, Mont., to Anchorage in 1962 and worked in construction. In 1974, he moved his family to a homestead at Mile 1378 Alaska Highway. This land, where he called home, gave life to his dreams of self-employment, professional dog racing, and all Alaska has to offer. He is survived by his daughter, Crystal Stordahl; granddaughter, Elizabeth Jo Stordahl; his brother; and many close friends he called family. A remembrance of Dennis' life will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, April 15, at the Delta Junction Community Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Interior Community Health Center, 1606 23rd Ave., Fairbanks, AK 99701 4/3/06 "Celebration of Life" for Violet Redington will be held Saturday April 8th The "Celebration of Life" for Violet Redington will be held Saturday April 8th, starting at 2:00 PM at the Wasilla Sports Complex in Wasilla, Alaska. Carol was well known on the international sprint circuit as Doug's number one supporter in his rise to the top in the 4 dog sprint class. Carol was actively involved in the Chatmac business & most of the Chatmac harnesses in use today were made by Carol. Doug has spent the last 8 months supporting Carol in her fight against cancer. The funeral is arranged for Tuesday, January 3, 2006 at the David McLoud Funeral Home in Waterloo, Ontario. 519-888-7700 1/1/06 Death in the Dogsledding Family It is with great sadness that I must pass on to you the message I just received from Doug McNeil that his wife Carol passed away on Friday morning (Dec 30), final succumbing to her battle with cancer. As you know, Doug and Carol had closed the Chatmac dogsledding business in early 2005 and made the move up to northern Ontario. Just after settling in, Carol was diagnosed with widespread cancer and started undergoing Chemo and Radiation treatment. To many of us in the dogsledding community, Carol will be sadly missed. She will always be remembered as the voice at the end of the telephone, and as a key player in the Chatmac business team. Her talents and skill are woven into every sled dog harness that we will now fondly treasure. 9/19/05 Dr. Charles Belford has passed away in his hometown of Laconia, NH, at age 85. For more discussion go to Doc Belford has passed away 7/20/05 The Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race lost one of it's original Race Officials on July 14th. Kenny Harris was the first Trail Boss for the TCSDR and the driving force behind the trail system that is known to the Mushers as the most beautiful in Michigan. Kenny was a transplanted "Yooper" from Ohio who added his demanding personality to the TCSDR from the start. Kenny's wife, Mary Eleanor, was also an original race official and served as Official Race Timer for the beginning years. The two of them helped turn the TCSDR into the race it is becoming. Kenny will always be a part of the TCSDR and will be sincerely missed by all that knew and worked with him. 7/7/05 With deep regret, we wish to inform you that John Lyman of Gilford, NH, driver of the "Flying Irish Setters" and sled dog mushing icon with the Lakes Region Sled Dog Club, passed away Monday evening, June 20, 2005. He was an integral part of the Trail Crew for the World Championship Sled Dog Derby and will always be fondly known by his handle of "Lead Dog". He was a past President of the club as well as an honorary judge. 4/28/05
Passing of Mushing Elder, Grant Beck Sr. Grant Beck Sr. of Yellowknife, NWT, Canada passed away April 21st at 80 years of age after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Fort Resolution, NWT in 1925. He is the father of 3 sons, all of whom have dog teams including: Grant Jr., Richard and Danny. He also has numerous grandsons and daughters who continue the family tradition. At the age of 18 Grant traveled to the Barrenlands by dogteam to trap. It is a distance of over 500 miles and he did it solo. He was one very inspiring and interesting man. Very soft spoken and gentle. He was a very athletic and loved a challenge.
