Beatrice Murphy Poston

August 10, 1918 - July 9, 2008

Longtime Alaskan resident, Beatrice Murphy Poston, 89, died peacefully on July 9, 2008 at her home at Sinona Creek. At her request, no services are being held.

Mrs. Poston was born, August 10, 1918 in Sunfield Township, Eaton County, Michigan. She was the daughter of Elba and Mary Murphy. She was raised at Saddle Bag Lake and graduated from Woodland High School.

During WWII she was a beautician in Battle Creek, Michigan. In 1947 she moved to Alaska, first to Fairbanks and then settling at Sinona Creek in Chistochina.

Beatrice Poston was one of the first school teachers in Chistochina. She was appointed by the Territory of Alaska. In 1948, she started “Posty’s Sinona Creek Trading Post”. Beatrice and her late husband, Posty, operated the trading post until their retirement in 1981.

One of her hobbies was sprint dog racing, which she did from the 1950’s to the 1980’s. She also enjoyed taking care of the landscaping of her property and having beautiful woods surrounding her home. Beatrice enjoyed her many neighbors and children of the community of Chistochina.

Mrs. Poston was preceded in death by her husband, Irving “Posty” Poston, brothers: Clair Murphy of Battle Creek, Michigan, Laurence Murphy of Winslow, Arizona, Verlin Murphy of Palacious, Texas, half brother–Carl Sacket of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Sister who preceded her in death: Daisy Johnson of Union City, Michigan, Barbara Sliter of Dallas, Texas, and young sister, Ruth, who died at age 9 at Saddle Bag Lake. She is survived by her sisters, Norma Murphy of San Francisco, California and Laurie Jewell of Elkton, Maryland, and many nieces and nephews who loved her.

We encourage those that wish to honor Bea’s memory to plant a tree or shrub in your yard.
