Pecos Humphreys

Pecos Humphreys of Talkeetna (and Texas) passed away April 13 after a long illness.

Pecos was a part of the "up the tracks" Talkeetna dog mushing community in the 70's and 80's when it was dynamic and "original".

He ran the Iditarod, the Yukon Quest, and local races. He drove dogs not as much for the competition as for the joy of it. He comes out of the era when we built our own sleds, sewed the harness, and cooked dog food in an iron bucket over a wood fire. My best memories of him are sharing campfires, strong coffee, burnt moosemeat, and quiet humor.

Memorial Service for Pecos will be held at 2 PM Saturday, April 29, at the overlook just south of Talkeetna.
