Lorrie Jeske of Hudson is the proud mother of a musher.

Her daughter, Heather, competed in her first sled dog race earlier this month and turned in a respectable performance. "She finished 12th among 23 teams and won $100," said Lorrie.

Heather participated in the eight-dog class of the Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race out of Bayfield Feb. 1-3. The two-day race covered a total of 80 miles in two 40-mile segments. She covered the course in a total elapsed time of less than six hours and 30 minutes.

"I thought she might be nervous in her first race," said a proud Lorrie, "but she was confident and happy."

Heather, 30, a 1995 Hudson High School graduate, has been interested in dog sledding for a long time. She has been a musher over the past eight years and currently is employed at White Wilderness Sled Dog Adventures in Ely, Minn., where she guides dog sled excursions.
