Kotlik's only musher needs some help

Western Alaska flooding: Utilities, homes damaged in several communities »

11/15/13 | Stan Afcan | hunting4yupiit@aol.com | 907-438-6276

I would like to request for donations or contributions on behalf of Felix Aketachunak Kennels of Kotlik, Alaska.

The community of Kotlik, Alaska suffered a devastating flood within the past week causing major damage to the community and Felix Aketachunak Kennels. Fast rate flood waters and ice packs made all rescue attempts impossible with human safety and well being a very big concern.

Mr. Aketachunak is an elderly dog musher in Western Alaska with well over 30 years in the sport and is also the only dog musher in the community of Kotlik.

Mr. Aketachunak is a crowd favorite because he sends a strong message to the people that it doesn't matter if you finish first or last, just as long as you give it a shot, pull up to the start line with a smile, give it what you got and finish clean and happy, as you should in life.

Being an elderly man, Mr. Aketachunak sometimes harbors the feeling that his attempts to keep the sport of dog mushing alive is often overlooked or taken for granted. The fall flood of 2013 claimed 9 of 16 dogs, mushing gear such as harnesses, gang lines, sled, as well as dog houses, bedding, and food for his kennel.

Any contributions of dogs, gear, feed, money or animal care products would be greatly appreciated in hopes to help keeping Mr. Aketachunak kicking strong.

Please contact Stan Afcan for arrangements or questions. hunting4yupiit@aol.com - Cell Phone # 907-438-6276.
