Trail Groomers

Lee Mattice - 200 gallon oil tank & attachments

Lee Mattice Groomer & ATV

My trail groomer is a 200 gallon oil tank, riding on its side.
The tank works well to take the air out of the snow - it compacts the snow, does not push it out of the way.

The ATV is a tracked out 700cc Kawasaki.

I attached a frame to the front of the tank for my drawbar to pin into (one drawbar with a trailer hitch fits all the stuff I drag behind my ATVs) Extra weight can be added to the tank by putting more cement blocks on top.

The bottom of the tank laid down a very smooth ribbon, so I bought some combs from Yellowstone and attached them to a piece of thick walled 3 x 1.5 inch channel iron. The comb attachment connects by chains to the back of the tank and produces a nicely contoured surface that is not only easier to see in flat light, but the ridges catch blowing snow for the trail.

The other attachment for the tank is a piece of studded snowmobile track that will attach to the front of the tank and run underneath it. The weight of the tank will press the track into the surface and I will be able to rip up the surface of the trail after freezing rain.
Mogul Master Groomer
The other groomer is a Mogul Master drag
with four cutting knives and a smoothing pan - used to take out whoop-dee-doos that the relatively short oil tank produces from time to time. Power to the actuator on the tongue is provided by its own battery, and there is a remote control that reaches up to the ATV to raise the unit onto the smoothing pan/lower onto the knives.
