Insight into early Iditarods from Joe May

Once in a lifetime....

Joe May's 1980 Team
Joe May's 1980 Iditarod Team

Dogs were all + or - 50 lbs. All related. One side of the line was from a sister of Earl Norris's Underdog. Other side was direct to Billy McCarty the old mail carrier and Serum Run driver from Ruby. The team finished 5th in the 1979 Iditarod and the same team ran in 6 races the following season, 79/80, including the Iditarod, and won them all...no second place.

Right leader is Funny who eventually went to Myron Angstom at 9 years old. The dog won the Kusko 300 for Myron. According to Myron Funny didn't train in the team. He ran alongside and lived in the house either on the couch or under the kitchen table. Myron told me he carried the dog off the starting line to Aniak the half way point, put him in front and headed back for the couch.

The collie looking dog (Fred) on the left behind swing is his brother and out of the same Norris setter/siberian Underdog sister. The third pup in that litter, also a leader, went to Sonny Lindner who won the Quest with it.

Left hand leader is Wilbur, a Fred pup. The left swing is another leader and a Fred pup. I was 6 leaders deep in that team. Once in a lifetime does an outfit like that come together. The power those guys put into the handlebar was awsome

S/Joe May
