Name:
Barbara Schaefer
Hometown: Grass Valley, CA
Will mentor by: e-mail, phone and in person
Will mentor in: distance, recreation, sprint and general
E-mail address: qualobo@hotmail.com
Phone: 530-273-4894
Experience: I love sharing my enthusiasm and passion for working with
Siberian Huskies. I suffered a serious head injury in early 1997 and my dogs brought
me back to life. I enjoy teaching experientially so I prefer mentoring in person, although
emails and phone are a good way to connect initially. I am known for my mentoring of
teenagers in Life through Dogs, teaching them about life while learning about
dog sledding.
I've been running my dogs since getting my first Siberian Husky in 1987, at first I
primarily showed my dogs in obedience and confirmation. In Fall of 1998 I attended Jamie
Nelson & Ann Stead's Mushing
Boot Camp and I was propelled into the world of sled dog racing. I started racing in 6
& 8 dog sprint, then 6 dog CA mid-distance (two 15-20 mile heats), and in
recent years I have been training for more traditional mid-distance races of 100+ miles
continuous.
I'm a past Sierra Nevada Dog Drivers vice-president and current Board Member and a main
instructor for SNDD's annual Introduction to Mushing Clinic.
I am also known as Barb Dog Drop, a nickname I earned for my outstanding
care of dropped dogs on the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race where I volunteered for 10
consecutive races in remote checkpoints caring for dropped dogs. My team of Siberian
Huskies and I have earned numerous awards including the Siberian Husky Club of America
Working/Showing Trophy in 2000, 2001, & 2002 and the ISDRA 6 dog to Unlimited Gold
Medal in 2005 & 2002 and Silver Medal in 2003. (http://www.qualobo.com)
