All Alaska
Sweepstates - The Crew at Candle

Photos and text provided by Joe May
I had intended to send only the group photo from the Candle checkpoint but
this morning realized so much of the character of the race is in the place and the people.
Seavey, King, Mackey, Sonny, and the other mushers provided the competition. Here are some
of the crew from the Candle checkpoint. Words can't touch the sentiment, but this is the
next best thing...S/.Joe

The Crew at Candle

Fred (Mo) Napoka getting his bib at Ft. Davis prior to the finish: Drove the Tuluksak
school team...with four students as handlers and pit crew. The only school in Alaska, and
likely anywhere, with dog mushing in the regular curriculum. This team, I thought, so
finely represented the "original" historical foundations of dog mushing.

Checkpoint building.
Originally built from timbers of an old freight barge. |

Checkers and Judge: L to R: Larry Westlake (Kiana) who raced in Rondy in the 60's with
Lombard and Attla. Mike Sherman who was born in Kiwalik (near Candle 70 yrs ago), and
myself who was born somewhere else farther back than that. |

Buckland volunteers. |

Volunteer from either Buckland or Deering. |

Chuck Fagerstrom
From Nome, owns the old hospital building and head checker. |

Kotz and Palmer, volunteers, cook, and visitors. |

Chester: Volunteer from Buckland. |
