Yankee Alaskan Malamute Club of New England in cooperation with the Phillips Brook Backcountry Recreation Area put on the Third Annual North Country Freight Race February 9, 2002. Our Third Annual Fun Race was a great success with twenty-one teams of various northern breeds (e.g. Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Huskies) racing in three freight classes over a rugged and picturesque network of trails, and a junior division over a fast ¼ mi straightaway. Each freight team had to carry 40 lb. per dog in harness. The novice class (1-3 dogs) ran over a 5.0 mile loop and the intermediate class (3-6 dogs) ran over a rigorous 7.0 mile loop. The open class (6-10 dogs) ran over a rigorous 12 mile loop.

As race marshal, Marc J. Garrett would like to thank the race committee (Ellen Dawson, John Foy and Kevin Hall) for their yeoman efforts in putting this event together. We would also like to thank the Phillips Brook Backcountry Recreation, Precise Dog Food, Pine Tree Knits, Mountain Ridge Kennels Sledding Equipment, Black Ice Sledding Equipment, Northern Exposure Kennels and Hall Sleds for their sponsorship and prizes. The weather also cooperated with a clear 32o F day at race time. Also thanks to all of the volunteers and spectators who came out to assist and support our efforts. All voiced of having a great time. We again look forward to, and are planning for next year=s race. See you on trail.
