Trails hard packed but 4 to 6 inch snowfall on the day before the race caused some soft snow on top of this base on the mid distance trails. Trails generally run through mountainous country with elevation changes from 950 metres to 1400 metres, running on unused logging and mining roads, two major river crossings, several creek crossings and the route travels through two mountain passes. Temperatures ranged from -6 Celsius (overnight) to about +5 Celsius at high noon on the second day.
