Tony Browning first to cross Kobuk 440 finish line, though actual winner to be determined
The Kobuk 440 Sled Dog race is winding down as the first mushers arrive in Kotzebue.
Tony Browning, a veteran musher from Nenana was the first to arrive, reaching Kotzebue at around 7:20 a.m.
His finish comes after a harrowing weekend that saw mushers held up in Ambler, waiting out a ground storm. After race officials restarted the course at 2 a.m. Sunday, it was a race back to Kotzebue.
Browning said the last bit of trail from Kiana to Kotzebue was fairly calm, describing the snow as “sugary” and “grindy”. The rest of the trail was a bit tougher.
