Laura Neese, the Michigan musher whose sled dog team is competing in the 1,000-mile Yukon Quest race, is down to 13 dogs on the race's second day after one was dropped because of a possible shoulder problem.
"Big O," a 3-year-old white husky that Neese describes as "having the voice of a bear dog," was spotted riding on Neese's sled when she arrived at the second checkpoint in Alaska earlier Sunday.
Nature's Kennel in McMillan, which owns the dogs and where Neese, 21, works as a guide, posted an update on the injured dog: "Big O is our most athletically challenged dog on the A-team due to his short stride length. But at the same time his injury is a surprise because he has incredible recovery time and great flexibility. Maybe next year Big O."
