I would definitely question my vet about the steroid use or get a second or third opinion. The dog will never recover if his immune system is not working properly or suppressed. If it is an option to take him off, it will take his system a while to get back to normal but there are quite a bit of good immune enhancers out there ie flax seed oil, vitamin c etc...
