Re: what's wrong with my dogs?

I would first look at your source of chicken, and how much are you supplementing with? Per dog/Per day? The amount you are feeding could be a problem also. If you are feeding too much, they won't eat well and may get diarrhea.

Another idea, how much water are you adding to your meals? I had a problem with feeding with too much water, in the meal, a few years back. The dogs would get the runs. Not sure exactly why, but Miki and Julie Collins explain the cause in their book "Dog Driver". If they are wormed, and don't appear to have any trouble medically, then I would almost guarentee it has something to do with diet. Whether it's a problem with feed bowls/buckets, or actual diet I couldn't tell you. If you are washing bowls etc.. then that rules out that possibility. See if you can find another source of meat. I would say that you would be better off with a meat mix, if possible. beef/chicken/turkey skins/fish/liver/etc.. See if you can find a fur farm in the area. Most fur farms have a large supply of meats that are used for feeding mink, etc.. I wuld think they could fix you up quite well with several different meats, and a high quality meat as well.

Fat ratios are somewhat difficult to explain. Difficult because I am far from any type of expert on the subject. Maybe someone like John Wood could give everyone a run down on fat ratios, etc.. I know he is away training right now, so it could be awhile. I can say that at this time, I am feeding a meat mix that is 50% beef, 30% turkey skins, 10% fish, and 10% liver. Exact fat ratio i am not sure of, but an educated guess would be around 50/50 protein/fat. The fish is there to balance the omega 3/6 fatty acids( which i don't have a handle on how that works either, but have taken advice from several more knowledgeable mushers to ad approx 1 ounce fish per day/per dog to equate the ratio.) If you want me to send you some more info about diet, email me at rmalicke@coslink.net I don't know much, but what I do know I am more than willing to share. Just don't want to take up all of Judy's space on this sight.
