We have a 2 year old male Alaskan Husky named Bailey. We got Bailey last April from a rescue society. About 1 month after taking Bailey home, he had his first set of seizures (that we saw). I have been tracking his seizures hoping to find a common thread, like activity for the day, outside temps, different foods, etc.... He typically has the seizures during his sleep (12 midnight to 4 AM), has 3-4 at a time, lasting between 30 seconds, now, but 4 minutes at the beginning. Believe it or not during the first 7 months of tracking these, he had them 5 times on the nights of full moons.
He is currently on 2 meds phenobarbital and potassium bromide, and although the seizures have gotten better, he is still having them. We have been working with our vet to try and regulate the meds and reduce the frequency of the seizures.
We are worried about the long term affect this will have on him. The vet has said that not reducing the frequency could cause some type of brain injury, which could result in other issues.
I am looking for others with similar problems and to see what others are doing. I am told that the 2 meds he is on are the most common for dogs. Is there anything else out there being used? Are there other factors involved like diet, activity etc...?
We are obviously very attached to him at this point and watching him go through these monthly episodes is very difficult. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks
