Judy and list,
I'm replying to the list as I wanted to address the Notice of Deletion of my original post.
I am new to mushing. This is the first winter I've had sled dogs on my own. I have found this list and the connections made from this list invaluable. Thank you.
A few months ago, there was some lenghty discussion on de-barking dogs. As well as some discussion on using "training implements". I had made a post concerning the AR people and what they thought, fearing possible repurcussions. I stood corrected.
I made a mistake yesterday and took a small team out on a trail that was indistinguishable. Lines got loose and an ensuing maylay happened. I'm not a genious, but I'm not an idiot either. I didn't pick up on "signs of impending trouble" because it just plain happened too darn fast. There was no warning that I saw. Maybe if I had been in dog driving for 30+ years, I would have seen it. Maybe not.
I made that post to get some view points from a variety of people whose opinions I've come to respect over the last few months. Perhaps I was too descriptive. But if two dogs fighting, one with his jaws locked on the other ones face doesn't require "heavy handed tactics", how should I have handled it? There were no food bowls around to shake at them.
I'm sorry if I "personally appaled" you. I'm also very sorry if I undid a whole lot of good work that's been accomplished. The whole reason of my initial post was to express amazement in the dogs. Their ability to overcome temporary setbacks. Too feel out the "Dog Drivers" on this list to maybe prevent something like that from happening again.
A "dog getting ill teatment because he is a dog" doesn't apply to my original post either. Although I agree with you in the general sense of that statement. De-barking a dog because he barks like a dog, isn't ill treatment is it? At least that's the general consensus.
I'll ask the rest of my questions in person or via email.
Thanks.
Paul
