No, not really. You have to slow down to almost a stop to shift into gear or else, like you stated, the ATV protests condiderably and you may damage the gears. (have to admit I do this at a bit faster pace than I probably should but if you do it real fast, I mean shift up into 3rd or 4th fast, you can get away with it while rolling slowely...not recommended. :)
