I've been reading everything you've all written on caring of pads and what salves to use, but I've still got a question.
My siberian has cracks on two of her pads. They don't seem to bother her in the least. One crack has been there since she was about 5 months old, the other is more recent. The vet says they're completely normal and to ignore them, but everything I'm reading here says I should be trying to heal them. I have tried putting bag balm on them at night, but they don't appear to get any better. (and the dog runs when she sees me coming with the balm on my hands...no matter how carefully I try to hide it!)
If they aren't affecting the dog's running abilities, should I be worried about them anyways? I was assuming it was kind of like the dry, cracked skin on the bottom of my feet...calloused, but not painful or bothersome in any way.
I like the idea of adding zinc to the diet as a preventative measure. How much zinc? I know too much of a vitamin is a bad thing, so does anyone know how much zinc should (or can) be added as a supplement?
Thanks!
