That makes a lot of sense - and is [probably] be the best answer to my question for the traditional toboggan sled. But a lot of the newer designs I've been seeing have the bed of the toboggan raised from 2"-6" (depending upon the designer). For toboggans with the beds raised just two inches, the narrow rails make sense: they give better maneuverability on ice/packed snow. But for toboggans with a 6 inch lift (or basket sleds in general) it would seem to me that "ski-type" runners might be better because they don't float on soft snow as well as the traditional toboggan. Oh well... it was just a thought I had anyway! I must admit that I have a built-in bias against anything being standardized when there are so many different conditions out there... and it costs nothing to consider alternatives unless and until you convince yourself that "My way HAS to be better!" ...
