I'm not experimenting [yet]. It just seems to me that those mushers more likely to run in softer snow would be better served with wider runners... like the difference between cross country skis and downhill skis. The downhill skier is more likely to run into softer snow, so his/her skis are wider; the cross country skier usually travels on a variety of surfaces - including ice - and so needs a narrower ski. These days most skis have metal edges that can be (and usually are) sharpened at least once per season to accommodate turns on ice/packed snow/etc. Just thinking about it would seem to indicate that the same would be true for sled runners as well. There could, of course, be a tradeoff. Wider runners made of the same materials would mean more weight. But wider runners made of the same plastics used for skis - even with metal edges - would be lighter than hard wood runners of the same width and length. Just thinking aloud ...
