Herb, be leary of experimenting with runner widths. As with mixing different breeds of dogs it's best left to the experts. I think wider runners unless you plan to water ski with them will put too much drag on the sled. Actually the newer runers have more of a wasp waist. They are not 1 1/4 all the way. They get a bit smaller in the middle & then widen out again. They are built more like a ski and turn much better. My husband has built about a dozen sleds and we had to ditch a couple that we tried something new on. It's a lot of work to just throw out. If you do try it let us know how it works. We run on ice so much I've though of putting blades on the runners like ice skates.
