Well said Curtis. I admit i was caught up in the emotional aspect of this situation as portrayed by the press. It would make more sense for all of us to petition the government for your way of life. I admire a people that can live off of the land and survive in places few white men would consider living. Like the Indians of the lower 48, your way of life is being challenged and man is trying to make you conform to a way of life they want you to live. I admit i was hurt at the thought of all these dogs being put down due to the situation. i understand that the pride of a people is at risk here. It is clear by your letter that the people are not asking everyone else to "come and rescue" them but asking for assistance in handling the situation. I know your people love your dogs as much as I love mine. It is hard for me when we hit lean times. We don't have sponsors feeding our dogs and giving us everything else we need. We don't have a large bank account. We build what we can and make what we can for our dogs. We feed them the best we can and we take very special care of these dogs. We love them like a part of our family and they are. It is the same for all of you out there. You are only trying to enlighten the rest of the world as to what their hunger for salmon is doing to the folks that have survived on it for so long. Please forgive my earlier remarks as to coming and getting the dogs in order to save them. It is clear they are not asking us to "rescue" the dogs. Curtis, you should know that emotion brings about response to a situation. The reason so many are trying to "send relief" is because of emotion. They don't want to see the dogs suffer for a situation out of hand. It is human nature to help others even if sometimes it takes emotional shock to get it in motion. The best advice would be to accept the help and move on. There has to be an answer to the problem and that is what needs to be addressed in this situation. The white man made the big mistake of taking away the way of life from the american indians and it seems they are still trying to dictate what they think should be the way of life for all. Understand, all white men are not the same. Most of us have big hearts and love freely. I agree that we all need to contact the fish and game and talk with them. there has to be a way to find out what is causing the shortage of fish in your area. debbie H.
