Im glad to hear that things went good for you. Its nice that your grandson is so excited about mushing. I have 5 children, ages 16,13,11,8,8, yes I have twins. Until now only the 11 year old wanted to mush. Now this year the twins are showing an interest. I have only been able to run my dogs a couple of times, as it is still to warm here.
Buuuuuuut a while back I asked about training a leader. Well I have been trying something, Im not sure if it is anything like what the rest of you do. I put his harness on, then I had a skijoring belt that I hooked him and me to. I had to extendaleads, and put those on a collar that we made for him with 2 D rings on each side. I hooked the extendaleads to those, and then ran those through this harness. Off we went. I called out the commands GEE or HAW and whatnot, and then I pulled on the lead on the side that I wanted him to turn. Something like with a horse and a bit, that kind of idea. Oh yes, he is 5 years old and I got him from someone that couldnt keep him anymore. He has been taught to heal, so that is the hardest thing to break him of so far. We are still working on his staying put when we stop. He immediatly runs back to heal next to me. Anyhow I ran him the other day with a yearling ( she is a flake in lead, but good in wheel or swing) and then with another dog that was given to me ( this was her first time in harness, and she is 11 months.)When I yelled HAW at him, HOLY COW, HE DID IT!!!! and the other one followed him. So of course Im thinking it was just a fluke, so I yelled GEE, and of all things HE DID IT!!! and took the other leader with him again. I couldnt beleive it. I have never had a dog that actually went the direction that I told them to go. AAAAAAAnd I got an ATV this year, and that makes things a TON easier. Now maybe I can get some serious milage on these dogs. I hope that everyone has a good and SAFE training season. Happy trails everyone.
