I was talking with a sled builder about runners a while ago. He informed me that the runners - no matter what the length - had been pretty much standardized for width: 1 1/2" for distance mushers; 1 1/4" for sprint sleds. Now I can understand the logic of narrower sleds for race leaders, but wouldn't it make more sense for those of us less likely to be leading to go with WIDER runners? Here's my reasoning: Charlie Boulding left the start of the 2000 Iditarod in last position (luck of the draw). With 79 other mushers ahead of him, calling the snow "soft" is a serious understatement. Does this make sense to anyone else out there? Does anyone use wider runners than the "standards"?
