I just don't know about those sidewinders. I have a friend that runs open North American & Rondy and places in the top 3. He says he actually likes the sidewinders. He thinks they run faster when they finally pick up speed. My dog that runs like that is one of our leaders and has won races in the open class. Like I said earlier she does straighten out once we get moving. Really it all boils down to overall performance. If I had a dog that could do it running backwards I would keep them in my team.
I had a dog once that always started with his tail in the air. You wouldn't believe how many people would turn to my husband after we took off and say, "It's too bad about your leader". Of course they weren't saying that at the finish line when we had beat their team. He just took off that way and once they got up to racing speed the tail came down. Normally I wouldn't even look at a dog with his tail in the air, but I was so used to this one that I didn't even notice it. All I ever saw with this dog was that his tug line was always tight.
