Herein lies the secret!! Most dogdrivers that have had dogs for any length of time usually accumulate unto themselves dogs that match their personality and time schedule. I, personally keep dogs that mature early, meaning that they can be run in 6 - 8 mile races by 10 months of age, and they can be bred at an earlier age. We also keep dogs that start the training season at 4 miles. After years of sorting, our whole yard is like this, not some that can and some that can't. It is much easier to train a competitive team if you are training the same kind of dogs. I also understand that this is not always the case when you first begin, and you may have to begin training at a shorter distance, but there is no magic in 1 1/2 miles or even in 4 miles. What dictates your initial training distance is the line of dogs that you have and how you have selected them in making up your team, temperature, humidity, and the condition of the dogs.
