I used to like to run in the dark, too, until I stopped one night and noticed one of the dogs had barked her leg on something and had a big scuff and a couple of splinters. Then one night I went up to Grand Portage and ran with Curt Gagnon with a borrowed team of his worst distance dogs. I was supposed to follow along, but I caught up, and kept seeing his light ahead. I turned my light off, and stealthily came up from behind. Then, sensing something on my right, I flicked on the light to see a big cow moose standing right by the trail. The dogs were already by when I got the light on her. That could have gone another way quickly. Running with inadequate light is romantic and all, but I think I owe my dogs closer supervision and trail inspection. Also, I train for speed, and you may not, so things come up quicker. I like to go out with a passenger on a cold moonlit night, but late in the season, not during training.
