I'm a rookie at this also, but here's my thoughts...last year was the first year I'd used them. Track down a back issue of Mushing a few months ago for a wonderful discussion of the pros and cons of them. A bad fitting wrap can be worse than not having one. Last year I ended up using them right after a run for about 3 of the 9 dogs I was training/racing and think it really helped joint recovery. A friend gave me a couple of the wraps, and I used them as a model for making my own (a worn out pair of thin neoprene waders works wonderfully). I used Absorbine gel under them and put them on immediately following a rubdown/massage of the joint area. I was recently given a bottle of Algyval which supposedly works better than the Absorbine. Unfortunately, I can not find anyone who can tell me exactly what the stuff in Alygval does (I've even asked a couple of biochemistry friends of mine). However, it seems to work wonders.

good luck.
