I train in East Central Minnesota, and I don't like to start running until I can count on stringing several runs in a row without a week of 80 degrees creeping back. I train for 6-dog sprints, and any dog that can't go 3 miles on the first day of training without hacking up and needing to be loaded will soon be running for someone else. I keep the attitude light and cheery, and stop a couple of times to pet everyone up. Take a cue from the distance folks and train at night. Even a bicycle can be rigged with a 12v motorcycle battery and equipped with really powerful lights. OldMusher has a 12v car battery on his rig, and three 200 watt Halogen off-road racing lights. This outfit makes the forest like daylight for approximately half a mile ahead, and 100 yards wide. Don't be a dodo and train at night with a headlamp. You can't see well enough, and you will wear out your equipment before racing season.
