Have you considered going on a trip from Knik-Finger Lake(or Rainy Pass) first. Although this may not be as technically challenging, you would still learn alot about your dogs/yourself. Plus, if you got into any trouble, there would be more lodges, people along the way that could help out. Besides, you could probably find more people who were willing/able to take this sort of trip.
