In the late 1970's and early 80's I saw some of these hounds. They had Doberman and Targhee Hound in the breeding. Targhee's are a mixture I am not as sure of, but I know it included a greyhound, irish setter mixture similar to some of Gareth Wright's original hounds. They were tall, red/grey/black dogs, a longish overcoat, flopper ears. The dogs were nice, but some of the Quebeckers were a bit irritating on the trail. They would yell French things and pass you with a burst of noise. The Open teams had the attitude that more than 9 dogs was effeminate to consider. These teams I saw didn't win, but they were right up there. In those days travelling with a dog team was even rougher than today, and the dogs looked pretty tired at Bemidji before one race. The lake running was to their advantage, and they hung in very well in open. I don't remember the musher's name.
