Conditions:
The second annual running of the Gichigami Express Sled Dog Race concluded on Monday after in Grand Portage, MN amidst some of the coldest temperatures the area has seen for quite a few years.

Ten hardy mushers stepped up to the starting line on Monday morning for the third stage of the race that started in Grand Portage on Saturday.

On the first day the route went from Grand Portage to Hungry Jack Lodge on the Gunflint Trail. That evening everyone enjoyed a banquet at Gunflint Lodge which concluded with a talk by Bruce Kerfoot talking about the early days when he was first introduced to dog mushing as a manner of transportation.

The second day started at Trail Center on Poplar Lake and concluded at The Landing at Devil Track Lake outside of Grand Marais.

On Monday morning, with temperatures of between -25 and -35 F (-30 to -35 C) everyone lined up at the start to see who would take first place and take home the top shares of the $25,000 purse, underwritten up by the Grand Portage Band of Chippewa.

Total times for the 3 stages: 62 miles, 59 miles and 52 miles.
