MAIL RUN 2014...WHAT CAN WE SAY….IT WAS GREAT!
Well the 2014, 22nd Annual running of the Gold Rush Trail Sled Dog Mail Run has come and gone. The weekend of January 24th, 25th and 26th was indeed a busy one…..and a very successful one.
What can we say…well we enjoyed outstanding weather, with several feet of snow on the ground and “just right” temperatures that allowed for both great dog mushing and spectator viewing.
A total of 21 mushers completed the three day run and carried just under 2000 pieces of official Canada Post mail from Quesnel to Wells to Barkerville for eventual delivery to 35 different countries around the world plus over 30 U.S. States and throughout all of Canada.
A total of 43 participants (dog teams, skijorers and skiers) completed the Barkerville Dash from Wells to Barkerville….. a record turnout! There were three fantastic trails, each packed hard and wide and offering fabulous panoramic views….all of the dogs seemed to love them. Each of the venues was well attended, each day the parking areas were crowded as folks took in the dog mushing action.
In addition, the Musher’s Sports Event, the Banquet and Auction, the Pot Luck Supper and the Musher’s Meeting offered lots of fun and the opportunity to make new friendships.
On Sunday the streets of Barkerville were full of smiling dog mushing/Mail Run fans, it is a memorable sight to see dog team after skier after dog team moving down Barkerville’s main street amidst 8 foot snow banks and stopping in front of B.C.’s 5th oldest post office to hand the mail over to the Postal Superintendent.
Hats off to organizers, the almost 100 volunteers, all of the participants and the community supporters.
