This 2-day race saw just about every winter weather pattern possible.
Saturday morning, under sunny skies, the first heat, the 4-dog Purebred Class, started at a crisp -34C (-29F) with a wind chill at -40C (-40F). By the time the 5th heat came around, the 4-mile Skijoring, at about Noon, the day had warmed up to -22C (-8F).
Sunday morning started in a total prairie blizzard with visibility reduced to about a half a mile, an ambient temperature of -14C (7F), 7 cm (3 inches) of new snow, wind gusting to 60 km/h (35 mph) and wind chill in the -33C (-28F) range. By the 5th heat on Sunday, the 4-mile Skijoring Class, the wind had quit blowing, the sun was out and the temperature had warmed to -10C (14F).
In spite of the brutal weather, the race went off without a hitch, no major cases of frost bite, no major injuries and many, many happy faces both 2-legged and 4-legged.
