The 1st Red River Sled Dog Derby was held February 29 through March 2,
2008.
The teams consisting of 12 dogs each ran the 154 mile race on the Red River of the North
from Halstad, MN to Grand Forks, ND and back. The teams had an option to stop at Traill
County’s, Belmont Park/ Frog Point for rest during the race. The race retraces the
history of dog travel that the took place in the Red River Valley from its fur trade era
to the 1917 Winnipeg to St. Paul MN Dog Derby sponsored by The Great Northern Rail Road
and the St. Paul Outdoor Sports Carnival.
