It was a beautiful day at the Montana Creek Dog Mushers race trails, located 20 miles north of Willow, Alaska, with clear blue sky and Talkeetna Mountains glimmering in the distance. The thermometer pointed at -20 F (minus 30C) with no wind, and a bleak winter sun trying to heat up the nature. Actually, just a perfect day for a sled dog race.

This was also a very nice day for Montana Creek Dog Mushers Association, because this was their first race in three years. Last time the held a race was December 2000. No wonder that everyone was just smiling. Two years of bad snow conditions has stopped all races on their trails. Today the trail was hard packed and held up good for all the teams. Brenda Nicolai from Nenana had the fastest teams both in the 4 dog and the 6 dog class. But when it came to 8 dog, she had to step down to second, because fastest team in 8 dog was Kourush Partow, Eagle River. In the open class, only two teams signed up, Daryl Hollingsworth and J P Norris. And they finished as they started out, Daryl in first position and JP in second.

Montana Creek must have the most fantastic view of all sled dog clubs, just look at the Talkeetna Mountains in the background!
