Don Bowers, author of "Back of the Pack" started this race in 2000. Never a money race, it is intended for rookies seeking a final qualifier for the Iditarod or Quest.
After his death that same year, a group of mushers/ex-mushers have continued to mount the race. This year the trail offered everything that might be expected on the Iditarod--rivers, swamps, twisting trails to woods, open water and two mini-Dalzell Gorges. Even the weather cooperated, with temps of -28F at the start to 28F and white out conditions at the finish.
