For Yankee Alaskan Malamute Club of new England

Yankee Alaskan Malamute Club of New England in cooperation with the Phillips Brook Backcountry Recreation Area and the Northern White Mountain Chamber of Commerce "Winterfest 2000" put on the First Annual "North Country Freight Race" 2000 - February 5, 2000. This Fun Race was a great success with fifteen teams of various northern breeds (e.g. Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskies, Chinooks and Alaskan Huskies) racing in three classes over a rugged and picturesque network of trails. Each team had to carry one 40 lb. bag of dog food per dog in harness. The novice class (1-3 dogs) ran over a 5.0 mile loop and the intermediate class (3-6 dogs) ran over a 6.5 mile loop. The open class (6-10 dogs) ran over a grueling 12 mile loop.

As race marshal, Marc J. Garrett would like to thank the race committee (Ellen Dawson, John Foy and Kevin Hall) for their yeoman efforts in putting this event together. We would also like to thank the Phillips Brook Backcountry Recreation Area and the Northern White Mountain Chamber of Commerce for their involvement and sponsorship; Eagle Dog Food, Pine Tree Knits and Recreation Equipment Inc. for their sponsorship and prizes; the weather for cooperating with a perfectly clear 22^o F day at race time; and all of the volunteers and spectators who came out to assist and support our efforts. All voiced of having a great time.

We are already looking forward to, and planning for next year’s race. See you on trail.
