Skijoring Championship Changes for 2012
The championship events will be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota on February 4th and 5th, 2012. On Saturday, February 5th, the 7k one dog championship mass start event will take place on the popular Lake of the Isles course and finish in Minneapolis on Hennepin Ave in trendy Uptown; on Sunday, February 5th, the 14k two dog championship (interval start) will take place at Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis using the same course planned for the 2011 National Junior Olympics. A Combined Championship title will be awarded to the female and male skijorer having the lowest combined time over the two days of racing (dog raced on day two must have completed the race on day one). Following the start of the championship race on Saturday, the 4k Sport and 2.5k Novice classes will begin once the championship field has completed their first lap and exited the start area. New this year on Sunday is the Chuck and Don's Skijoring Loppet 7K on Sunday, Feb 5 on the Theodore Wirth Ski Trail. This gives skijoring enthusiasts a once a year opportunity to skijor on this fine trail without having to go the 14k distance of the National Championship. Last year's event, the largest in the world, attracted 200 skijoring teams and nearly 5,000 spectators. Kevin Murphy, race director of the event for nearly a decade, expects another record to be broken based on preregistration numbers. Reminder that current SkijorUSA members receive discounts for SkijorNow and well as a video tour of the Theodore Wirth Ski Trail.
