Knik 200
Joe Redington Sr. Memorial Sled Dog Race Field Full at 40 Teams
A full field of 40 teams has signed up for the 2012 Knik 200 Joe Redington Sr. Memorial Sled Dog Race. A waitlist has been started for additional teams beyond the 40-team limit. The Knik 200 Joe Redington Sr. Memorial Sled Dog Race is a 200-mile sled dog race that begins January 7, 2012. It is an officially sanctioned Iditarod and Yukon Quest qualifying race. The Knik 200 begins at Knik Lake and runs to the bush community of Skwentna where teams are required to take a six-hour layover before returning to the finish line at Knik Lake. A new, mandatory checkpoint at Yentna Station Roadhouse for the inbound-only route to Skwentna has been added this year, though there is not a mandatory time requirement. Race Organizer Robert Sexton is excited about the new checkpoint. “It’s going to build onto a 100-mile race that we’re going to add to the Knik 200 next year.” For the first time in the race’s history, mushers will carry SPOT tracking devices. In collaboration with trackleaders.com, fans will now be able to follow the teams in real time via the race website at www.knik200sleddograce.com 2012 entrants include previous top-two finishers Ken Anderson and Ray Redington Jr., Iditarod champions Martin Buser, Lance Mackey and top-five Iditarod finisher DeeDee Jonrowe are also competing. Yukon Quest winner and four-time Iditarod champion Jeff King is among those on the waiting list. Trail conditions are expected to be favorable if temperatures cool and any additional snowfall is minimal. “Yentna and Skwentna are really loaded with a lot of snow,” said Sexton. “The trail, we hope, will be nice and packed and hard, but weather could change at any time. Parking the teams will be one of our biggest challenges.” Race updates and live tracking will be available on the website: www.knik200sleddograce.com . Updates will be posted on the Knik 200 Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/knik200 and on Twitter at @Knik200.
