I love these things! They are super handy and heal up cuts so fast, it's amazing. I have a large and small stapler plus the remover, but am wondering where to buy more? Not that I go through a ton of staples, but I'd like to have backups just in case. I got these from a friend, who I think bought them on Ebay - but where else can I look? Any ideas?

you can get then through Cold Spot feeds in Alaska. They come preloaded with staples. Dont loose your remover as they charge extra ffor another and they work GREAT!

You can also try some of the mail-order pet catalogues or horse catalogues (most of them are on the Internet). Jefferspet, KV Vet, etc.

Yeah Shawn - those are similar to the ones I have, but $26US each!! Ouch! I saw a whole box on Ebay for $24US this afternoon. Not sure if I can get those yet, but it's a good idea to check there and save some $$$. Then again, it will likely take me years to go through a whole box (I hope!).
Thanks Opposum -will check those out too.

What do you use to numb the area around the wound prior to stapling?

Cliff I don't want to seems "terrible" but dogs are pretty tough and most of the time they do'nt need (like humans) numb drugs...

Cliff,
I found what Magali said to be true. I've stapled some of my dogs without anything to numb them and they just sit there waiting for me to be done. They're amazing. I think the pain from the lidocaine or other medicine (it burns badly when injected) is worse than the pain of staples going in. It doesn't do much if you use it topically. So, just clean it really well first, (otherwise it'll get infected) and staple it.
The other thing to think about is if the wound is really deep, bring them to a vet, because leaving a pocket underneath the closed skin will cause a lot of problems, the body will fill the pocket with serous fluid and that is a great medium for bacteria to grow and you have a huge infection in a relatively short time.

JUst like Jan said, staples are for skin tears only (MINOR muscle tear underneath) and should be used for this purpose ONLY. Another thing, always leave a small area for fluid to drain (if there is any). This small area will close up on its own. I dont use any numbing agent either. If done properly dog will barely feel anything.

I just had a couple staples put into a dog's knee last week after he attempted a shortcut through the corner of a pipe framed kennel at mach 5 playing "chase the puppy". He never even flinched when getting them in and it's healing wonderfully.
