New to sledding and looking for suggestions on a harness for beginner recreational use. I have been looking at a couple of harnesses, but I would appreciate input from more experienced members

Thank you!

A little depends on personal preference and a whole lot depends on the dog's body shape. You did not mention the breed(s) you are working with.

I race with Airedale terriers who have a short, square body, and I have found that H-backs work well for most of them, though I have one dog that uses another type (can't remember the name, but it is shorter then the H-backs.) Most common is the X-back.

My dog is a shepard/husky mix and weighs about 62 lbs, if that helps.

I was mostly looking at x-back harnesses, but I also would like to know if there are any preferences on manufacturers, there are so many!

In my variable climate I prefer smooth-surface harness filled with closed cell foam (not a fleece surface). I got ice balls in the fleece.
I have had many brands, no particular preference other than smooth surface.

H-back(not the collared type)
Make sure it fits good.
If you're just using 1 dog I think it's better to have a long tug or a harness that will allow the "tug to keep down pressure off the hips
