My 5 month old sled dog broke his tibia bone and has a metal rod in place. Are there any persons out there who can give me hope for my dogs future in racing?

I have a 7 year old who has been in my team for several years after a compound fracture of the tibia at 3 years old. His was plated rather than relying on a rod because plating apparently allows a more certain anatomically correct repositioning of the bones.

Recovery was a challenge because with an open fracture, infection is a problem. He wouldn't leave the sutures alone, and later we had the plate removed to eliminate excessive cold sensitivity. Several months in a crate. However, he is now one of my best leaders and has no problem with the leg. Spendy though.

On the question of rod vs. plate I understand if the break surfaces have features (jagged shape) that mate up well when repositioned the rod can work. Ask a specialist, though.

Thank you Mitch! Honored to hear from you. Im brand spanking new in the sport and trying to learn as much as possible. I have already pegged Chief as my lead dog, so it broke my heart at the same moment he broke his leg... there IS hope then!
