After cutting the strips for the handle yesterday, and forgeting to mark them in the middle so that i could bend them. i ran into a problem, while clamping the strips to the bend frame, they snaped. i steamed them for about 30min, and were about 1/8th of an inch thick.
It took me about 5 min to find a pencil to make them, and another 5 min to get them all lined up to bend. Could they have dried out that fast? Any help, tricks or tips would be wonderful thanks.

Thats exactly what happened. After coming from the steamer they have to go directly to the form right away. Remember also to plug the ends of the steamer so as not to lose any moisture. Next time put tape around the slats in a couple of spots before steaming and have your center mark pre marked. Depending on your set-up for your mold 2 sets of hands may be better so the job can be done quickly. Just remember the job needs to be done quickly but not abruptly, bend the slats around the corners at a consistent pace about 10 seconds to do it, so the wood fibers have time to stretch. Keep them clamped for 24 hours or longer then glue them up.

Thanks Razor, i just got done recutting all the strips again and ill give it ago tommorow and have my dad help me.
Should i have all 4 strips taped together? so all i have to do is pull them out and bend them.

Why do many say they don't steam at ALL? Or no need to steam?
And the runners don't split or delaminate. Are they laminating/gluing green?

| Roy this is for the handle i cant get the 90 bend to go with out steaming, i broke the strips last night. already got the runners done, they should be good to go and ill be glueing with Titebond 3. so i should be safe to run at -35f and still be safe. |

| I do glue up driving handles with out steam bending. I use air dried ash planed down to about 1/8" thick (maybe 3/32) but I leave about a 2-3" radius for the bend. That makes around 7 or 8 strips just for a driving bow. I do a dry run with out glue which seems to kind of pre bend the strips. When I re-clamp them the second time they go even easier. I do add a outer removable strip which helps keep the tension more even on the actual lamination and also keeps it from getting dents from the clamps. I wrap that outer strip with packing tape so it doesn't end up getting attached to the lamination. |
