Last month when we went and Picked up dog food from NW Farm Food Co-Op in Burlington they mentioned that alot of mushers in Montana, up North in Alaska, and here in Washington are switching too a Raw Cat food that is Salmon based for thier dogs...claims it is just as good and about half the cost...This is information I am getting 2nd hand and I am wondering if it is true and if you are one of these mushers how are your dogs doing on this diet?
Just picked up 420lbs of this cat food to give it a try. NW Farm Food said many dog breeders are buying it and really like it...he did not know how working dogs have done or do on it but did add that many mushers are now buying it...he reccomended still feeding a high quality kibble along with it...we are going to feed 50% cat food and 50% blue race diet with Eagle kibble...
the break down of ingrediants are:
Salmon (farmed) 23% Chicken 19.7% Bone meal 2% Beef meat 21.4% Liver 23.3% Cereal 2.3% VIT E 0.1% Vit B-12 0.05% Tripe (green rinsed) 8.2%
46.6% Protien 28.7% Fat 14.5% ash The Cost is .255/lb...
we'll see how the dogs do on it...tonight they inhaled thier food...of course they do that all the time but they seemed to like it...smells like hell...but if yer a dog I s'pose it smells pretty good.
With that ingredient list I just can't imagine it would be BAD for them.
I've been baiting the morning quart of water with a spoonful of canned cat food in the morning, and I swear the stinkier/fishier it is, the more they like it.
yeah it comes in the 10# chubs. I'll let you know how we like it...so far so good.
while harnessing up my lead dog Chewie this am he belched in my face and I got an interesting waft of fishy smell...made me gag...Chewie seemed to think it was funny.
