During daylight runs I have taken up the habit of wearing an IPod.

This season, I intend to run alot at night and would like to bring my music along.

What tips and tricks do you guys have for wearing an Ipod along with your headlamp?

What I do when exercising (running, walking, etc) is use an armstrap for the iPod, that I put tightly around my upper arm. Works a charm if I'm not wearing bulky clothes. Also, if it's very cold, the iPod might not take kindly to being exposed to the elements. Since we don't get much lower temperatures than around -10C (14F), this is rarely a problem. At lower temperatures, I'd probably put the iPod inside my jacket and get a remote cable for controlling it.

Regarding the headlamp thing, I use in-ear buds, so that's not really an issue. I use the kind where you squish the buds together, which then expand in your ear. Cancels out a lot of noise.

David,

I've pulled my headlamp off by accident when removing a hat, neck warmer or simply getting the foolish battery leash stuck around my arm.

As much as I wish to enjoy music, I don't want to be concerned about ripping the cord off my head. A bluetooth headset sounds like a great idea!

I saw a hat at the local Apple/Mac store that had headphones built into the ear flaps! That might be the solution. I'd use caution with the "noise cancelling" ear buds since you want to hear other teams, snow machines, etc. out on the trails with you.

My wife sewed earphone into my hat for me and it works great. I guess the new ipod touches are the ones to get for blue tooth... my nano doesn't have it. Before the hat thing I used to just wrap the headlight cord and earphone wire together so they were like one wire, and I kept the battery pack and ipod together with a rubber band - just to keep all the dangling wires in one place.

There is actually a bit of research out there that supports the theory that some people process information better, and therefor preform better with music. (google Dunn and Dunn learning styles and Howard Gardeners multiple intelligences) And I fall squarely in that category. But didn't like frozen ear bud in my ears, or not being able to hear the rest of the world. My solution was to get a wrap around headset. Nike makes a very nice light weight one, without foam cushions (no sweaty ears) for runners that I wear either up in my hat by my temples or wrapped around my neck. Either way they act as speakers and I get my music fix while still being aware of any sounds like teams around me. And again, for me, it is more comfortable then ear buds. I had also thought about sewing something in a hat, but then I am committed to one hat, and why be committed?

i would check into a battery booster for your ipod/mp3 player for much greater play time potential in cold weather

I have a Belkin external battery pack for my iPod nano. It is bigger then the iPod, but allows me to use it with AA batteries. If I load it with lithium AA's the battery life is great.

I think I have the same Belkin... and it works great for me too. At first I had one that took 9v batteries and was much smaller but it was a pain to have to send out different size batteries all the time. I also found that when my double A's "died" in my headlight they still worked for a few hours in the iPod. Which is cool because all the waste in distance racing bugs me- disposable dishes for god's sake!

A battery pack that works via AA's is an excellent idea.

There is just no way I'll be able to deal with a headset cord.
Now all I need to find out is if my IPod can be upgraded with Bluetooth.

Pretty sure older iPods don't have bluetooth but that the new iPod Touch does.

I don't have one of these but it looks like a good idea from my perspective. 3 aaa batteries could be rechargeable or lithium cold weather type.

You can get a bluetooth adapter for iPods from wiRevo and probably some other places, and that strikes me as a reasonable (if power-hungry - you'd need to figure out a way to stack a battery pack on the adapter) way to get rid of the wires.

Melinda, exactly! Two jumper packs (AA's + bluetooth adapter); the size of which is likely going to compete with my ColdSpot 4 D-cell battery box.

Anyone technically savvy enough to try manually adding internal Bluetooth?
