The term "dryland" implies cool, crisp autumn days - perfect for training. The reality today in PA is wet snow, mixed with rain -about 2 inches of snow from last night in the kennel - great for mud.

I propose we return to the term used back in the 80's - wheeled racing. You just know you're going to deal with muddy dogs, grit in your teeth, mud in your ears - all that fun stuff during wheeled training & racing. No promise or expectation of being dry - when it's nice weather, it's a gift, not a promise of "dryland".

Ha, good one! can relate there. Nothing but rain here for the last few weeks, even when we went camping. Signs are showing a promise of a 'hard winter' here (a good winter by musher standards)
After it got done raining we got snow an hour from here (rare this early in NC) and it has been in the 40's during the day. A good change compared to last years 70 degree November weather!!

I'm sure it will dry up soon. No point in worrying about weather conditions that you cannnot control!

Not really complaining or worrying - just stating that the relatively new term of "dryland" is overly optimistic and not very realistic. Let's call it what it is - training and occasionally wheeled races.

Nancy, We need swim fins and scuba gear here. I "found" a puddle (more like a pond) on a run. Suffice to say the whole team now knows how to swim.

Just another example - we arrived today to 4 inches of snow in Saguenay Quebec for the "dry" land world championship. The organization has put a lot of effort into plowing the trails. Most competitors either walked or biked the trails today and the general opinion is that it'll be safe.

But with rising temps predicted, I can guarentee it won't be dry.

BRSD, I'm sorry to say that we won't be going this year. We had a death in the family (may Father). And Aly has a playoff game in Akron Saturday.

We may come up to watch Sunday..

Se you at the races.

Well as I get so excited about the Dirty Dog Race here in WI I have to consider pulling out. Ugh! They are calling for mid 50s Saturday and Sunday. I just am not comfortable with racing Siberians at that temp. I have one that overheats at temps over 35 as it is. As much as I want to go I can't risk my dogs. What temps do you use as a cut off point?

Ellie, most of my dogs can run at 52-54F but it depends on the humidity. Granted they go a lot faster below freezing or even 40 degrees but we still move forward! And those are very short runs with stoppages for swimming.

Yeah I decided to run the race and we'll stop along the trail if we need to. I'm not concerned about winning so having fun and keeping the dogs in good health is what it's all about. There will be plenty of water for them and we'll just take it easy.
