My grandfather used axlegrease and pine tar on his dogs and his horses.
My dad used axlegrease and pine tar on his dogs and his horses.
I used all sorts of expensive, fancy, "NEW AND IMPROVED", modern and/or medical remedies and/or repellents.
Apparently Apple Cider Vinegar, antibacterial dish detergent and and baby oil work. I can't attest either way as to its effectiveness as I would think flies would be attracted to the nice smells so I've never bothered. However, I have found ACV in a jar with plastic wrap over top and a toothpick hole punched through it (like an upside down volcano)attracts fruit flies into "the trap". There again my hypotheses of flies being attracted.

Now I just use axlegrease and pine tar on my dogs and my horses. Cheap and effective.
Shoulda just listened to them "stupid old men".
This year tho' has proven to be exceptional as nothing seems to have worked very good...
.....but axlegrease and pine tar has still worked better than anyting else.

Apparently insect repellent(no names here) is an aphrodisiac to mosquitoes and some flies.

SWAT is a really good product to help with healing and repellant.
