The following instructions are for using Ivomec, 1% injectable ivermectin as is used for cattle, NOT the ivermectin equine paste. DO NOT INJECT A DOG WITH IVERMECTIN. ADMINISTER ORALLY. INJECTING IVERMECTIN CAN CAUSE A NASTY ABCESS. DO NOT ADMINISTER IVERMECTIN TO ANY DOG W/ SIGHTHOUND OR COLLIE ANCESTRY. THEY MAY HAVE A FATAL REACTION. THERE ARE OTHER PRODUCTS TO USE FOR THESE BREEDS.I have used ivermectin for 20 yrs as a heartworm preventative, as well as a filaricide after treatment for adult heartworms. The dosage is 50 micrograms per kilogram as a preventative or post-treatment filaricide. This equals 1/8 ml per 55lb canine or 1/16 ml per 27.5 lbs of canine. It can be used as a dewormer at a dosage of 200 micrograms per kilogram; 1/2 ml per 55 lbs, or 1/4 ml per 27 1/2 lbs. It is nearly 100% effective as a preventative or filaricide, but is limited in effectiveness as a dewormer of some species. It does not mix w/ water or saliva, so it is recommended that it be diluted w/ propylene glycol, or put on a piece of bread to be administered. Strongid is a trade name for pyrantel pamoate, and is a good canine dewormer for hookworm and roundworm. This is the dewormer of choice for the first dewormings of very young puppies. A better general purpose dewormer for adult dogs is fenbendazole, which controls whipworms in addition to hook and roundworms. This is also sold as a cattle or equine product under the name of Safe-Guard. The canine fenbendazole product is Panacur. In reading the package inserts, note that the dosage of active ingredient for dogs is 10 TIMES THE RATE PER LB AS FOR CATTLE OR HORSES. So, the increments marked on whatever size syringe of paste you use of the cattle or equine product on your dogs is to be multiplied x 10. Example, 50 lb dog gets 550 lb dose of Safe-Guard, and this is to be administered 1 T a day for 3 consecutive days, repeated at 14 days for hookworm and 21 days for whipworm. MAKE SURE IT IS SAFE-GUARD, NOT SAFEGUARD-PLUS. Make sure the product is fenbendazole w/ no other product added. Both pyrantel pamoate and fenbendazole are very safe, no known adverse reactions, tested on weaned puppies at 5 T recommended dose.
